Cycling on Île de Ré

Île de Ré is made to be explored by bike. Across the entire island, there is a network of cycling paths that lead you past villages, beaches, and salt fields. Along the way, you'll come across small markets, terraces, and harbors. The routes are flat and straightforward, making it easy to head out for a day without a fixed plan. You can rent a bike near the campsite.

Villages, harbors and local products

Around the campsite you'll find villages where daily life mostly takes place outdoors. In Rivedoux-Plage, you can walk along the harbor, watch oyster farmers at work, and pick up fresh products at small shops or markets. The white houses with colored shutters and hollyhocks define the streetscape. Further on the island, you'll find more villages like these, each with its own atmosphere. Wander through narrow streets, stop for a coffee, or join in for local dishes. Oysters and other shellfish play a major role here. It's not a place where you check off all the sights, but somewhere you walk around and naturally end up staying.

Active outdoors: sports and nature

Besides beaches and villages, there is plenty to do for those who want to be active. In the area you can go paddleboarding, kayaking, or sailing along the coast. Horseback riding is also an option, as well as fishing or hiking along the coastlines and through nature reserves on the island. The combination of water and land makes it easy to alternate activities. Start your day out on the water in the morning, then go cycling or for a walk later in the day. Thanks to the flat landscape and short distances, everything remains manageable. You don’t need to plan much to have a varied day, and many activities are located within a short distance from the campsite.

How can I explain my experience at this campsite in a few words? Be absolutely careful where you put your camping car because of the pigeons that scare away anyone unlucky enough to put it where they are, and they are almost everywhere. Don't be fooled by the photo showing the campsites facing the sea.... they've put up wooden cabins everywhere, in the style of mobile homes, so they don't face the sea any more, but there are still either pigeons or full sun. Aging toilets and random cleanliness. As for the pool, it's magnificent but in full sun, no deckchairs but a few poor blue plastic chairs. What a shame! This is the 4th campsite we've been to on the island in two weeks, and it's the same price as Huttopia, for example, which is 6.kms away and where the difference is enormous. Even the reception is not very professional, the staff is very young and it shows. If we'd had this information, we wouldn't have stopped. On the other hand, the campsite is very well located for cycling. Direct access from the campsite.

We were a group of 9, spread out on both sides of the campsite, in lodges or bungalows, one with a sea view. Relaxed atmosphere, new lodges. Bikes available for hire, no need for a car. Bakery and supermarket next door. Beach access on both sides of the island. Contrary to a previous comment, the gate is closed to cars from a certain time. We really enjoyed our stay, especially as the regular campers, who have been coming for 10, 20 years, are very nice! Keep up the good work!
