I was there from May 8 to May 21, 2026. The campground is quite nice, and the owners and staff are very friendly. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great during my stay; it was freezing at night, and it even snowed once. I had one of the lowest-lying spots, which are very prone to moisture, and because of all the rain, the ground was just a mess of mud. The campers around me had the same problem. The water access point was nearby, and emptying the toilet at the washhouse wasn’t a problem either, thanks to its proximity. The washhouse itself was relatively new, and the restrooms, dishwashing area, etc., were very well maintained. However, it must also be said that this facility is too small when there are campers down on the meadow and several more above it, which naturally detracts somewhat from the overall impression. You have to pay something like a visitor’s tax at the campground—the operator can’t help that, of course—but you really do wonder what it’s for. In my opinion, Braunlage doesn’t really have anything special to offer; scenically, especially heading toward the Brocken, you’re almost entirely surrounded by dead trees. A bread roll service is offered at the campground, and there’s a campground restaurant, though it’s not run by the campground owners. You can also buy gas (on an exchange basis) on-site. Showers are included in the price, and electricity costs 80 cents per kWh. I just really wanted to take the steam locomotive up to the Brocken one more time—which has become very expensive in the meantime—so that’s a done deal for me. In the area, there are visitor tunnels, both small and large, and a glass factory that’s also worth visiting… Werningerode and the narrow-gauge railway with the steam locomotives are, of course, also great. There are unguarded railroad crossings along the track; I don’t know when I last saw something like that…. ;-))
