This nature reserve is a paradise for adventurers and nature lovers who love rugged landscapes.
Cathar castles
Scattered throughout the rugged Languedoc countryside are the mysterious castles of the Cathars. These medieval castles once served as a refuge for the Cathars, a religious group persecuted in the 13th century. Today you can visit these castles and enjoy the impressive views. Montségur, Quéribus and Puilaurens are some of the most famous castles, each with a unique story. The ruins, built high on rocks, give a glimpse of the region's troubled past. Located on an impressive rock formation at an altitude of 800 meters, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The hike to the ruins is an adventure in itself, with winding paths and steep cliffs. Once at the top, you can explore the remains of walls, towers and chapels and relive the history of the Cathars. Built strategically, this castle was once connected to nearby Quéribus. Today it is an impressive place where you can immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere. Whether you come for the history or the panorama, Château de Peyrepertuse is guaranteed to leave an impression.

We had a wonderful stay at the Randonneurs de Fenouillet campground. Our hosts, Mariam and Timon, were very welcoming and attentive, and gave us great advice on walks and things to see in the area. Top marks also for the food—local and seasonal—we really enjoyed it! The accommodations (a safari tent in our case) were very functional, comfortable, … and well-equipped. We felt right at home there.
In short, we weren’t familiar with the area, but we’ll happily return—for a longer stay!this is a translation, click here for the original
