A nice campground on an island in the Seine, with a charming little town within walking distance.

A huge disappointment; the welcome was very lackluster.
I’ll keep this short: we just got back from a 3-week road trip in France where we stayed at about 7 campsites, and this one was by far the worst.
4 stars? Just because they have a pool.
It was 40 degrees, the pool was dirty, not enough umbrellas, lounge chairs, etc., trash cans were overflowing—in short, it was filthy. Don’t be fooled by the photos on the website… it’s very different.
Poorly maintained in every way, even though the season is just around the corner…
    We barely stayed one night....
Nice view of the chateau, though—we’ll end on a positive note.

Grote teleurstelling , ontvangst heel sober.

The facilities are of good quality, though the green spaces are not well maintained. The staff is welcoming but too rigid due to limited reception hours.

We stayed here for three nights for €72.60, or €24.20 per night. For that price—which includes electricity, hot showers without tokens, and clean restrooms—that’s a fair price.

The surroundings are definitely the biggest selling point of this campground. Saumur is a charming little town with plenty of restaurants and lovely streets. In the early season, however, many places close fairly early.

The surrounding area is perfect for bike rides. Expect some hills, but the beautiful views, castles and cave dwellings, vineyards, and sights more than make up for it.

The restrooms were kept clean, but we found the lack of toilet seats a bit of a drawback.

The showers operate with a push button, and you can adjust the temperature yourself, which works great.

We were in spot 132. This spot was quite far from both the pool and the trash containers. The pool closes as early as 7:00 p.m., which feels very early on hot days when it’s 35 degrees. There’s also no campground store. For groceries, though, you can bike to the Lidl in about eight minutes.

The bar staff was friendly and helpful. The reception staff had made a mess of our phone reservation, but in the end we got a spot even though there was a sign saying “fully booked.” Incidentally, there were still quite a few empty spots. There’s also construction work being done on the mobile homes; we weren’t bothered by it, but there were spots where the sounds of hammering and sawing went on all day.

Although the campground is right on the Loire River, as a guest you hardly notice it. There are no campsites with a view of the river, and you can barely see the Loire from the campground.

All in all, it’s a great base for exploring Saumur and the beautiful surrounding area, but we find the four-star rating a bit on the optimistic side.

The campground offers sufficient comfort and is well-maintained, but it lacks some of the amenities and charm we’d expect from a true 4-star campground. The surrounding area, however, undoubtedly deserves high praise.
