Lauwersmeer National Park is an expansive area of lakes, reed beds, and sand flats where more than three hundred bird species have been observed. You can explore it on foot or by bike along signposted routes by the Lauwerszee, which was once open water and is now a freshwater lake. Along the way, you may spot spoonbills, avocets, and, in good weather, groups of red deer grazing on the open plains. If you want to see more than just water, head to the Lauwersmeer Visitor Center for information about the land reclamation and the nature of the area.

Aquazoo Friesland in Leeuwarden combines an aquarium with a reptile section and a tropical butterfly house. You walk past shark tanks, sea turtles, and a large collection of freshwater fish from Europe and tropical regions. The attraction is indoors, making it a good choice even on grey days. Located less than twenty kilometers from the park, you can easily drive there.

Drive to the Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker
The Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker is the oldest working planetarium in the world, built by a wool carder in the eighteenth century right in his own living room. The gears and weights that keep the solar system moving are still running. You walk through the small rooms of the house while above your head the planets follow their orbits to true scale. Those who want to know more about the builder and his calculations can follow the explanations in the adjacent museum. Franeker itself is a compact town with a historic center, perfect for a stroll after your visit.

What a great campground! The owners are so welcoming. The facilities here are top-notch. I stayed here for two days in my RV. There are wonderful hiking and biking trails in the area. The scenery is beautiful!!!
