First of all: our stay at De IJsvogel was fine. Just fine, like at pretty much any other vacation park.
What makes the experience at this park different is the overwhelming amount of marketing you’re bombarded with, which causes your expectations to not quite match reality. All those service-oriented, helpful, and luxurious emails (and … WhatsApp messages) full of cheerful emojis (ChatGPT ;-)?) make it seem like you’re stepping into a warm bath with rose petals. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
The front desk is only open two hours a day. If you arrive a bit later, there are plenty of good options, but during your stay, there’s really nowhere you can turn to for help. We arrived after 5:00 p.m., and the Wi-Fi wasn’t working. After calling the “emergency service,” we eventually fixed it ourselves by finding a network adapter and replacing the plugs. The plug turned out to be completely bent. Not a huge problem, but no one checked in afterward to see if everything was resolved. And precisely because of that marketing, you’d expect them to be very attentive to such things.
The hot tub was also dirty and full of sand. Someone comes three times a week to clean the tub: open the top, run a mesh net through it, replace the chlorine tablet, and that’s it. When I think back to how quickly he finished, it’s actually a miracle that no one gets sick from that water.
On top of that, our cottage had quite a few issues: the oven kept cutting out, there was no instruction manual, the shower had no curtain (probably for hygiene reasons, but it felt like a prison bathroom), and the gas stove barely worked. The burners didn’t fit properly, so we could only use one burner. The battery on the rental bike was completely dead, and the table leg was broken, causing the table to wobble. The hedges are so thin that you can comfortably enjoy a view of your neighbors’ breakfast.
On their own, these might not be issues you wouldn’t encounter at another vacation park. But De IJsvogel presents itself as a luxury, service-oriented park where everything is arranged to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Unfortunately, that image isn’t lived up to in practice. A beautiful and luxuriously furnished cottage is nice, but when the amenities don’t work and there’s hardly any follow-up when problems arise, there’s not much left to enjoy. I’ve also read similar experiences in other reviews, where even the furniture is broken.
We eventually received a discount code, just like the person who checked out before us and clearly had complaints as well. It would have been so different if the girl at the front desk had acted as if she cared about our experience, instead of immediately reaching for the stack of discount codes. I didn’t need the discount code. After all, we most likely won’t be coming back here anytime soon. ;-)this is a translation, click here for the original
