Discover A Truly Artistic Town

Be amazed by the unique art and cultural offerings that Twente has in the small picturesque town of Ootmarsum. The scenic surroundings and historic buildings in the city center have inspired many artists in the past, and continue to do so today. Despite the town itself having only 5,000 inhabitants, it houses numerous studios where you can admire artworks by both renowned artists and emerging talents. In Galerie Art Brut Kik, you will find the art in its purest form, showcasing works exclusively created by artists with intellectual disabilities. And it doesn't have to end with just observing. Many of the studios also offer workshops, so let your creativity flow and discover the artist within yourself.

A Day On The Water

The Regge region is beautiful from the water. Experience the tranquility and surroundings in a whisper boat or sloop, which you can rent at the park. The boating route takes you along the Oliepelmolen, the fish ladder, old farmhouses, and green surroundings. Looking for something more active? Then hop in a 2-person kayak or 3-person canoe. Or book a cruise where the skipper tells fascinating stories while you enjoy a snack and a drink.

Take A Dive Into The World of Beer

Beer is a part of Twente! You can find numerous delightful breweries and beer specialty shops that offer a refreshing cold Twente beer. But for a truly unique beer experience, you must visit Othmar Bier in Ootmarsum. They have the first-ever beer spa. Immerse yourself in a beer bath, which along with water, contains hops, malt, and yeast, and enjoy unlimited pours of your own Othmar beer. The bath is set at 39 degrees Celsius, and the active enzymes and vitamin B will make you feel completely rejuvenated. To make your wellness day complete, you can also indulge in a relaxing massage or sauna.

Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park

Sallandse Heuvelrug is one of the largest contiguous heathland areas in Europe, formed by hills during the ice age. Nowadays, it offers opportunities for adventurers and nature lovers to hike, mountain bike, cycle, and go on nature walks. There are numerous beautiful trails where you can be active and clear your mind. In August, an enchanting purple landscape emerges as the heather blooms.

We stayed here for 11 nights in September with two young children. After reading reviews and seeing the beautiful posts on Instagram, we had high expectations for this park. We did have a nice time overall. The park is beautifully situated by the river in a stunning setting; the three-bedroom house was spacious (at least for the four of us), the outdoor playgrounds and trampolines were a lot of fun, the petting zoo was a hit, my daughter had a great time with the entertainment team, and the coffee and Molke beers tasted great. Still, there were a few things that disappointed us. For example, on the warmer days, it was sweltering in our house—and it wasn’t even really summer yet. When it was 26 degrees outside, it was 34 degrees in our cozy cabin. Not all of the rooms had screens, so we couldn’t sleep with the windows open in that heat either, because swarms of mosquitoes would come in. The cabin also wasn’t very clean upon arrival. For example, we found a used tissue and some dental floss under the bed when we arrived. It’s not exactly pleasant to have to throw those away yourself when they belong to someone else. The fridge was so small that you had to go grocery shopping every two days because you could barely fit anything in it. The Tiny House that my parents had booked when they came to stay for a few days smelled like a sewer, and the Wi-Fi didn’t work half the time. The suggested solution for the sewer smell? Just spray some perfume. The pool is outdated and not much to write home about—fun for an hour at most. The water was sometimes very cold and smelled strongly of chlorine. The store at the park is incredibly expensive… All in all, I have somewhat mixed feelings about this place. The marketing is top-notch—it all looks incredibly cozy and like a real party—but in reality, it was a letdown. There wasn’t much to do, and the nice outdoor restaurant with the festival vibe was only open on Fridays and Saturdays… maybe it’s a bit livelier during school breaks; that could be the case :)

Even met parfum spuiten.

We had booked a wellness cottage that included a hot tub. However, neither the cottage nor the hot tub matched the photos on the website. Upon arrival, the cabin was extremely dirty and hadn’t been cleaned properly. There were food scraps all over the floor, chairs, and couch. The shower was covered in mold, and the couch was covered in such filthy stains that you didn’t dare sit on it. There was also no welcome package, and the hot tub heating tablets weren’t delivered until the next morning. The hot tub was a green “little tub” and certainly not the one shown in the photos on the website. The area for heating the hot tub wasn’t “covered,” so you can’t use the hot tub in damp or rainy weather. When we mentioned this at the front desk, they said someone would come take a look, but no one ever showed up.
All in all, a very misleading and disappointing experience.

It was a really wonderful short getaway, perfect for relaxing.
It was super clean, and the service was very friendly. Everything was really easy to book and use.
One minor drawback was that the hot tub didn’t work for 1.5 out of 3 days, and we had to wait a long time for service—a waste of money. But otherwise, great value for the price.
