A very lovely camp site with wonderful staff and good vibes. Quite dusty (but summer and drought!) and loos don’t have seats. Had a great time.

“Accueil Vélo” at Huttopia: except when you arrive by bike...

After more than 4,000 km of family bike trips combined, this is the first time we’ve been turned away by a campground without any attempt to find a solution.

We arrived by bike at Huttopia Rambouillet with our two children, ages 5 and 9. “Campground full”—we could hear that loud and clear. What stunned us was what happened next.

While cycling, we’ve regularly encountered campgrounds that were full. Very often—especially at campgrounds accustomed to travelers on the go—they find a solution: a shared space for cyclists, a few square meters of grass, a spot not normally designated for a campsite… We’re traveling with a small tent, not an 8-meter-long RV.

At Huttopia Rambouillet: nothing. No initiative, no effort to find a solution, no flexibility. The manager simply referred us to the rules and the fact that everything was fully booked.

This seriously calls into question the very concept Huttopia sells.

Nature, simplicity, disconnecting, camping, adventure… but apparently only if you’ve booked online and followed the commercial process to the letter. As soon as you step outside those parameters—even if you arrive by bike with two young children—the front desk seems to have absolutely no room to maneuver. What, then, is the point of a physical reception desk if no one can take the slightest initiative when faced with an unforeseen situation?

The only “solution” we were ultimately offered? A cottage at €200 a night. For a family of four bike tourists asking for just a few square meters to pitch a tent.

It’s like a dream.

And yet, Huttopia Rambouillet proudly displays the “Accueil Vélo” label. In our experience, this label mainly manifested itself as a nice bike repair station, clearly visible in front of the reception desk. As for the rest, when it comes to actually welcoming cyclists, we couldn’t find any evidence of the concept.

We ultimately had to set off again and bike for nearly two more hours with our children, facing the prospect—if we found nothing—of actually having to camp out somewhere in the forest.

This experience raises a key question about the disconnect between Huttopia’s marketing and the reality of its business model.

The contrast is striking: in their marketing, they emphasize freedom, camping, travel, simplicity, and nature; but once at the front desk, there’s no flexibility and no solutions—other than a cottage costing nearly 200 €.

They sell us on a simple, authentic experience close to nature; but we discovered an extremely standardized operation where everything seems to have to be booked, priced, and fit into a box.

And the prices contribute to this feeling. Campsites that can cost nearly 80 € per night, accommodations priced around 200 € when a cyclist is simply looking for a patch of grass… In fact, Huttopia already held the record for our most expensive campsite—in Saumur a few years ago: a tiny spot with no electricity.

At this price point—and with marketing so heavily focused on nature and authenticity—we have every right to expect more than just pretty decor, a repair station, and rules enforced without discretion.

We travel by bike precisely because we love this simple form of tourism, the encounters, and the places that can adapt at least a little to passing travelers.

Tonight, we were left with the strong impression that at Huttopia, nature has become a marketing product that’s been particularly well monetized.

It’s a shame. Behind the concept and the beautiful images, we were simply four cyclists—including two children—who needed a few square meters of grass and some rest.

We just got back from an overnight stay at the campground: 4 out of 8 of us have our arms and legs covered in bumps.

Yet the campground had previously been closed due to processionary caterpillars. Despite the warning signs posted at the entrance, the staff on site explained to us that the itching was most likely caused by residual caterpillar hairs in the mattresses...

Reopening to the public without cleaning, sanitizing, or replacing the infested bedding is unacceptable. Posting signs does not exempt the facility from providing clean and healthy accommodations.

Wonderful campground! The bed was a bit narrow, though. The bathroom door creaked loudly. And unfortunately, there were oak processionary caterpillars everywhere, which really made your skin crawl. But no mosquitoes. We did see a little hedgehog and a robin scurrying around near the tent.
The pool was great; the pizza was just okay one time and good the next. Friendly staff. It was nice to discover this campground with our teenagers.
