Cycling on Île de Ré

Île de Ré is made to be explored by bike. Across the whole island there is a network of cycle paths that takes you past villages, beaches and salt marshes. Along the way you pass small markets, terraces and harbors. The routes are flat and easy to follow, so you can easily set out for a day without any fixed plan. Bike rental is available near the campsite.

Villages, harbors and local produce

Around the campsite, there are villages where daily life largely takes place outdoors. In Rivedoux-Plage you walk along the harbor, watch oyster farmers at work and buy fresh produce from small shops or markets. The white houses with colored shutters and hollyhocks define the streetscape. Further on the island there are more villages like this, each with its own atmosphere. You wander through narrow streets, stop for a coffee or join in for local dishes. Oysters and other shellfish and crustaceans play a major role here. It is not a place where you tick everything off, but where you wander around and naturally linger somewhere.

Active outdoors: sport and nature

Besides beaches and villages, there is plenty to do for those who want to stay active. In the area, you can go SUPing, kayaking, or sailing along the coast. Horse riding is also among the possibilities, as well as fishing or walking along the coastlines and through nature reserves on the island. The combination of water and land makes it easy to alternate. Out on the water in the morning, later in the day cycling or going for a walk. Due to the flat landscape and short distances, everything stays easy to navigate. You do not need to plan much to still have a varied day, and many activities are within short distance of the campsite.

Summary created out of 165 reviews

The park enjoys a prime seaside location with easy access to beaches on both sides and nearby amenities within walking distance. Guests appreciate the friendly staff and the heated swimming pool, although the pool is located across a busy road. The sanitary facilities are dated and cleaning is often experienced as inadequate, which represents the biggest area for improvement. Noise disturbance from the main road is also regularly mentioned as a disruptive element.

We’ve stayed at the camping in our campervan for two nights. At our arrival we had some trouble since there had been a miscommunication with regards to the base of some of the campervan spots. The crew of the camping was very kind to help us out.
The camping also offers a bike rental, which is very recommended at this island. We thought the price per day was very fair and similar to the ones we saw later on the island.
During our stay some of the bathhouses weren’t open, also the toilets weren’t the cleanest. Yet everything else, including its location compared to markets etc., was perfectly fine!

At my campsite, I couldn't get cell service; the cleanliness wasn't great—there were beer cans in the restrooms and a pack of cigarettes lying around. The entertainment was good, but the price was a bit high. Some staff members didn't have the proper qualifications, particularly the pool supervisor.

Right next to the beach but also next to the main road (which is very busy), so it’s not exactly quiet
No Wi-Fi, contrary to what’s stated on the website. Sure, you can get by without it, but telling one person there’s a technical issue and another that it’s a campground without Wi-Fi—I call that taking people for fools...
Otherwise, the pool is nice and the restrooms are decent
For those who want to do everything by bike, choose a campground in the middle of the island; otherwise, the Whale Lighthouse is quite far away

We stayed for the first 15 days of August with two young children (ages 3 and 1). The mobile home was new and comfortable, the shower area was very spacious, and the large pool with a wading pool was just a few minutes’ walk from the beach—very convenient. The only downside was the internet connection. Well, it’s not their fault, but it’s very frustrating. The second issue is the campground’s entertainment program, which isn’t great—there aren’t enough activities for kids, no kids’ club or parties for the little ones, and no restaurant on the campground.

But other than that, it was perfect, and we had a wonderful vacation.
