Huttopia Lac d'Aureilhan - Mimizan

I went there a few times this summer with my kids—no problems during peak season.
However, during the off-season—that is, last weekend—there were no lifeguards?
The pool was overrun by people smoking and drinking alcohol; I didn’t feel safe with my daughter, so we left and went somewhere else. I was very disappointed. When you call to report … all this, they don’t care and act surprised.

In short, it’s a shame—the place was beautiful, but we’ll go somewhere else next year. Read more Show less

There was a really nice atmosphere at this campground over the weekend—we stayed in a safari tent during the off-season. The staff was very welcoming, the natural setting was perfect for relaxing in peace, the pool was superb and very pleasant, and the proximity to Mimizan was a plus. We’d definitely go back—this package is great!

A pleasant stay in a beautiful natural setting, with a few areas for improvement.

We spent a little over two weeks at Huttopia Lac d’Aureilhan starting in mid-August, as a couple with our 4-year-old child, on a self-selecting site with a large tent. It was our first time at Huttopia, and we enjoyed our stay.

The highlights: a … beautiful, natural setting with a magnificent view of the lake, a calm and peaceful atmosphere, no bothersome insects, new and convenient restrooms with soap for washing hands, a very nice pool particularly suited for children (shallow throughout), and a superb region for bike rides and beaches. A convenient grocery store with fair prices, fun evening concerts, and a pleasant atmosphere at the end of the season, especially with the many vanlifers.

However, there are a few areas that could be improved. Since the campground was fully booked in August, some areas weren’t as clean as they could be: the restrooms were heavily used, with strong urine odors and dirty walls, and the pool entrance and bar/café area—while not dirty—were far from spotless. The staff was friendly but seemed very tired and sometimes left to their own devices. In fact, we never saw or identified the campground manager, which sometimes gave the impression that a team of young people was running the site without any visible supervision—and that made us feel sorry for them. Check-in, check-out, and information about activities or the surrounding area were also rather brief. The bikes and wagons are functional but could be better maintained. Some of the children’s activities would benefit from better equipment and organization. Finally, the lack of shade in certain areas—particularly around the bar and the community center—is a shame in the middle of summer: we probably would have spent more time in those areas if they had been better protected from the sun. The lake is pleasant for swimming, even though there’s a lot of algae in the middle, and the unsupervised pool (which is clearly marked as such) sometimes leads to unruly behavior by teenagers.

Nevertheless, we recommend this campground for its natural setting, its lakeside location, and its atmosphere. This campground was recently acquired by Huttopia, and we imagine it’s currently ramping up its operations. It has potential!! For a tent site during peak season, the rate seemed a bit high to us given the level of amenities. Read more Show less
