Recreation lake, nature and outdoor activities at Hunzepark
Hunzepark is located in the middle of the Drenthe Hondsrug, in the Netherlands’ only geopark. That means burial mounds, pools and dolmens within cycling distance of your front door. The park has a heated outdoor swimming pool with diving board and sunbathing lawn. On the recreation lake you can go canoeing, supping or pedal boating, and those who prefer to stay on dry land can enjoy beach volleyball or table tennis. During the holiday periods, HunzeOutdoor organizes activities for young and old alike, from archery and climbing to raft building and ziplining. The HunzeCafé serves snacks and fries, and when the weather is nice, on the terrace with a view over the canoe pond. Around the park there are extensive cycling and hiking routes, with the Boomkroonpad as the highlight, a walk among the treetops. WILDLANDS Adventure Zoo and Slagharen Theme Park are a short distance away.

Visit one of the many amusement parks
Drouwenerzand Amusement Park is just a stone's throw from the park. Here you'll find water slides and a large indoor play paradise. Less than half an hour from the park is Kabouterland - in the heart of Exloo - with gnomes, trolls, animals, and plenty of play opportunities. Sprookjeshof Amusement Park is 14 km from the park and is best known for its fairy tale forest, playground, and petting zoo. In short, a lot of fun for a day out with the children.

Climb through the treetops at the Tree Crown Trail
The Outdoor Center Tree Crown Trail is located about 10 km from the park. You walk there via suspension bridges and wooden platforms through the treetops, up to about 20 meters high, face to face with birds and squirrels. The trail is accessible for different ages and gives you a good view over the Drenthe forest. A guided tour or walking independently are both possible. Allow an hour to an hour and a half for a leisurely walk.
Dive into the history of Camp Westerbork
Memorial Center Camp Westerbork is located about 24 km from Gasselternijveen, in the middle of the Drenthe landscape. You walk across the former camp grounds where more than one hundred thousand people passed through during the Second World War. The museum tells that history through archive material, personal stories and an extensive outdoor exhibition with restored buildings and wagons. Anyone who takes an afternoon to visit can thoroughly explore both the museum and the grounds. The combination of outdoors and indoors makes the visit impressive without feeling overwhelming. Visit the museum, walk around the camp grounds for free, or join a guided tour.
Cycling along the Hunze Valley and dolmens
The stream valley of the Hunze begins almost immediately behind Gasselternijveen and forms one of the most beautiful cycling areas in Drenthe. Rent a bike and ride past hay meadows, fens, and along narrow forest paths that become overgrown in summer. The cycling network in the valley connects to the province's broader junction network, so you can put together your own loops. Those who ride a bit longer pass the villages of Gasselternijveenschemond and Drouwen, where you can rest on a terrace. The route is relatively flat. If you still have time, visit the Hunebed Centre in Borger: a museum about prehistoric times, where you will find the largest dolmen in the Netherlands and discover how the dolmen builders lived. A must-visit in Drenthe, the primeval province of the Netherlands!
