Glamping at mini-campsite De Wedze

Camping de Wedze is located in the north of Friesland, close to the border with Groningen, right in the middle of the meadows. The campsite is small-scale and quiet, with a recreation room for a game, a magazine, or an evening of television when the weather outside is not so great. Hop on your bike and you can ride along vast meadows and small villages at your own pace. National Park Lauwersmeer is nearby: there you can walk, cycle, and spot birds, or take a canoe to explore the area from the water. Lauwersmeer is also an official Dark Sky Park, so at night you can see a starry sky that is rarely so clear in the city. Dokkum, one of the Frisian eleven cities, is close by, with canals and historic buildings. Leeuwarden can be reached in less than half an hour by car.

Walk through Lauwersmeer National Park

Lauwersmeer National Park is an expansive area of lakes, reed beds, and sand flats where more than three hundred bird species have been observed. You can explore it on foot or by bike along signposted routes by the Lauwerszee, which was once open water and is now a freshwater lake. Along the way, you may spot spoonbills, avocets, and, in good weather, groups of red deer grazing on the open plains. If you want to see more than just water, head to the Lauwersmeer Visitor Center for information about the land reclamation and the nature of the area.

Drive to the Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker

The Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker is the oldest working planetarium in the world, built by a wool carder in the eighteenth century right in his own living room. The gears and weights that keep the solar system moving are still running. You walk through the small rooms of the house while above your head the planets follow their orbits to true scale. Those who want to know more about the builder and his calculations can follow the explanations in the adjacent museum. Franeker itself is a compact town with a historic center, perfect for a stroll after your visit.

Super neat and clean campsite with very friendly owners. You do need a bike or car to go anywhere, because the campground is very quiet, but therefore somewhat remote. The nights are pitch dark so you can watch a beautiful starry sky. On Fridays the owners provide roast chicken and it was delicious.

Beautiful quiet campground. Spaciously set up in a former tree farm. So lots of birds singing you awake in the morning. Sanitary facilities are fine and clean. Everything is thought of. Beautiful surroundings for cycling.

Prachtige rustige camping. Ruim opgezet in een voormalige boomkwekerij. Dus heel veel vogels die je 's morgens wakker zingen. Sanitair is prima en schoon. Aan alles is gedacht. Mooie omgeving voor fietsen
