Go on an adventure in the Schoorl Dunes

Discover the Schoorl Dunes, one of the most varied dune areas in North Holland. Several walking routes through woodland, heathland, shifting dunes and open dune landscapes start from the Schoorl Dunes Visitor Centre. Staatsbosbeheer calls this the highest dune area in the Netherlands, with paths leading you to high dune peaks, ancient forests and drifting sand. Along the way, you may sometimes have to climb quite a bit, but you will be rewarded with views towards the sea, the polders and the village. Choose a short route for a peaceful walk or opt for a longer hike with more elevation changes. At the visitor centre, you will find information about the area and its routes, useful for families and active walkers of all levels. Put on your walking shoes and discover just how surprisingly rugged the North Holland dunes can be here today.

Taste local wine from the polder

Discover North Holland's wine culture during a visit to a vineyard near Callantsoog. Around twenty kilometres from the village are Wijngaard Koopman and Wijngaard De Koen, both located in the heart of the polder landscape. Walk along the rows of vines and learn how grapes grow here in a climate of wind, changing temperatures and salty influences from the coast. During a guided tour, you will learn more about the work in the vineyard and the choices needed to make wine in North Holland. Afterwards, taste several wines, from crisp white to rosé or red. Take a bottle home as a souvenir and discover how surprisingly local wine from North Holland can taste during your holiday.

Walk through the village of Callantsoog

Experience the welcoming village atmosphere of Callantsoog, a short distance from the park. The compact centre lies directly behind the dunes and has shops, terraces and dining venues close together. From Dorpsplein, you can walk up the wide steps to the beach in just a few minutes, making it easy to combine the village and the sea. Get an ice cream, take a seat on a terrace or continue walking towards the dunes. Head out and discover how relaxed Callantsoog feels.

Walk along the beach at Callantsoog

Enjoy the North Sea beach at Callantsoog, located almost directly behind the dunes. Walk through the village towards the wide sandy beach, where you can enjoy the fresh air, look for shells or stroll through the surf with your feet in the water. In and around Callantsoog, you will find several beach pavilions, ideal for coffee, lunch or a drink with sea views. Take your time, walk along the waterline and experience Callantsoog at its best.

Overall, we had a wonderful stay at the campground. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the campground itself is beautiful and extremely dog-friendly. The surrounding area is also ideal for a vacation with a dog. The location is generally lovely, though the campground isn’t right on the beach—it’s behind the dunes. If you want to walk to … the beach or to Callantsoog, you have to walk a short distance along the main road on the bike path. Unfortunately, there isn’t a proper sidewalk there, which isn’t very pleasant with children or dogs. However, it’s generally not far to the beach. Callantsoog is about a 15-minute walk away and is a truly charming and cozy village. The campsite cabin was generally well-equipped, though unfortunately a bit dingy and not particularly well-cleaned when we arrived.

Beautiful location, though there’s room for improvement given the price.

On the plus side: The location was excellent, and our child absolutely loved the playgrounds. The main building offers great amenities for kids. The park is well-maintained, and our vacation home was clean.

We found the following a bit disappointing: The pillows … and mattresses were quite basic—more like camp beds—and the garden chairs weren’t particularly comfortable. The kitchen is also rather sparsely equipped; for example, there’s no salad spinner. The houses are also quite close together—in our case, you could practically see onto our neighbor’s plate. Upon arrival, we also found two spiders and a moth inside the house. In addition, there was no toilet paper or soap, and the dishwasher had neither salt nor rinse aid. One load of laundry, including the dryer, costs an extra €10, which seemed a bit outrageous to us given the total price. A bit inconvenient: there’s no crosswalk to cross the street.

As a family, you spend a lot of money and get only minimal amenities in return—here, it seems, the focus is primarily on maximizing profit, not on quality for the guests.
Overall, though, it’s a nice place for a family vacation.
