Glamping at Toll Pond in Twente with a recreational lake and sandy beach
Toll Pond holiday park is located in Twente, on the edge of De Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. The heart of the park is a large recreational lake with a small beach. There, you can swim, float on an air mattress or rent a SUP. Fishing is also possible, so bringing a fishing rod is worthwhile. Toll Pond Restaurant overlooks the water and serves lunch and dinner, with a terrace on sunny days and takeaway meals if you prefer to plan your own evening. Children can enjoy the playground with trampoline, the panna cage or a rented go-kart. There are also tennis courts, a table tennis table and a pétanque court. Mountain bikes can be rented for a ride through the rolling hills of De Sallandse Heuvelrug, where hiking and cycling routes are also marked out. Walk through the Sallandse Heuvelrug
The Sallandse Heuvelrug is one of the most varied natural areas in Overijssel, with open heathland, forests and drifting sands alternating with one another. You can walk along well-signposted paths past distinctive plant species and may even spot a black grouse. Those who prefer cycling can take one of the cycling routes that run straight through the landscape. In the late afternoon, take a moment at one of the higher points: the colour of the heath in the distance is impressive without needing any words.

Step into the Wierdense Veld
The Wierdense Veld is a raised bog area near Hoge Hexel, where you walk over wooden boardwalks through a landscape of sphagnum moss and small pools. On clear days, you can see far across the open plain. The area is a breeding ground for meadow birds, so keep your eyes open: a Eurasian bittern or common snipe is not unusual here. The route is short enough for a morning walk and quieter than the larger natural areas in the region.
Enjoy a day at Hellendoorn Adventure Park
At Hellendoorn Adventure Park, you can ride the Netherlands' longest white-water ride, speed through a roller coaster in the dark and play laser tag in the cellars of a country house. For those who want to travel the world without a plane ticket, the Discovery Club takes you through different continents. The park is packed with activities all day long, so plan your visit early to beat the crowds at the most popular attractions. Hellendoorn is just under ten kilometres from the park.
Cycling through Overijssel from the park
Around Hoge Hexel, there are dozens of kilometres of signposted cycle paths, from the junction network that leads you past farmyards and small settlements to longer routes towards the Sallandse Heuvelrug. You can set off by bike directly from the park and decide for yourself how far to go along the way. A fifty-kilometre loop takes you past the Wierdense Veld, through Wierden and back via the country lanes of the Reggedal. Those who want to stop halfway will almost always find a café terrace in the small villages along the route.

I was very pleasantly surprised
. After booking, I checked the reviews, and that’s when I started to have a few doubts.
But... We received a friendly and welcoming reception at the front desk.
It’s a small-scale resort, situated entirely around a lake. If you walk around the lake, it’s about 1.4 km. A number of the cottages are privately owned. And since many people aren’t there, it’s quiet—even now, in the middle of the summer season.
It turned out there was entertainment. I didn’t see many children, but the staff were still fun and enthusiastic. There are several regular activities every day.
Our cottage/chalet for 6 people (305b) is very spacious. I was very surprised by how roomy it is inside: a kitchen with plenty of storage space, and lots of closet space in the bedrooms. Very clean bathroom, fixed screen doors on all French windows and doors, air conditioning that works well, a spacious garden with two seating areas, a pier, and a small sandy beach. Well, of course you can tell it’s been lived in—there were soap scum marks on the kitchen cabinets from the cleaners, and even a spider on the ceiling—but hey, that’s just part of it. In the end, I grabbed the vacuum cleaner myself to get rid of the spider, just to put my teenager’s mind at ease.
The restaurant is indeed closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but this is clearly noted in the information folder, just like many other dining, shopping, and entertainment venues in the area.
Unfortunately, the lake’s water level was low (just like the rest of the Netherlands right now in the middle of summer), and we could only walk the boat under the bridge. But hey, that’s a unique experience too, right?
If I had to name one downside, it’s that there’s only one outlet on each side of the bed. So you have to choose: nightlight, alarm clock, or charging your phone.
(I could easily plug my phone in the kitchen, so it wasn’t really a problem after all.)this is a translation, click here for the original
Zeer positief verrast
Dus keuze maken: nachtlamp of wekker of telefoon opladen.
