Walk through National Park Lauwersmeer

In National Park Lauwersmeer, you can walk or cycle through a varied landscape of expansive reed beds, quiet ponds, grasslands and bodies of water. The area is known as one of the most beautiful bird areas in the Netherlands, so you can regularly spot spoonbills, geese, birds of prey and countless other waterbirds here. With a bit of luck, you may also see roe deer or a fox. At the nature centre, you can learn more about the history of the area, which was once part of the sea, and discover why so many animals have found a home here. If you’d rather get out on the water, you can hire a boat and experience Lauwersmeer from a completely different perspective. Peace, space and nature always take centre stage here.

Sail to Schiermonnikoog

Just a short distance from Lauwersmeer National Park, the ferry departs for Schiermonnikoog, the smallest inhabited Wadden Island in the Netherlands. As soon as you arrive, you can easily rent a bike to explore the island. Cycle past the characteristic red lighthouse, visit the historic Wassermann bunker and stop by the famous Whale Jaw in the village. Thanks to the car-free character of the island, you can enjoy peace, space and beautiful views of dunes, beaches and salt marshes along the way. Schiermonnikoog is also known for its wide beaches and unspoiled nature, making a day trip quickly feel like a mini-vacation.

Spot seals on the Wadden Sea

A boat trip across the Wadden Sea is one of the nicest ways to experience the nature of this unique area up close. During the cruise, you go looking for seals that are relaxing on the sandbanks that dry out at low tide. Along the way, the skipper tells you more about the remarkable tidal landscape and the great significance of the Wadden Sea for birds, fish and marine mammals. It is no coincidence that this area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. With binoculars, you can often spot even more animals, from terns and gulls to groups of resting seals. A relaxing excursion for young and old.

Step into the Groningen city center

Groningen's city center is compact, lively, and surprisingly diverse. Within a short distance, you can walk from the Grote Markt to the iconic Martinitoren, which with its height of 97 meters has towered over the city for centuries. On market days, dozens of stalls fill the square with regional products, flowers, and fresh treats. Those who climb the tower are rewarded with an impressive view over the city and surrounding countryside. The modern Forum is also worth a visit, with changing exhibitions, films, events, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views. Between the historic streets, cozy shops, and atmospheric terraces on the Vismarkt, it is easy to wander around for hours and discover the city at your own pace.
