We recently stayed at Vakantiepark Bergumermeer, and unfortunately, our stay was quite disappointing.

During our stay, we found a large rat in our cottage one evening. Since the front desk was closed at the time, we immediately called the park’s emergency number. We found the response from the employee on the phone to be disappointing. When … we told her there was a rat in our cottage, she responded along the lines of: “What do you think I’m going to do, sir? I’m not going to chase rats away.”

During this phone call, we actually suggested ourselves that they offer us alternative accommodations. With our two young children, we no longer wanted to stay in that cottage after finding a large rat.

A staff member then came to inspect the situation. It turned out there was an opening under the refrigerator, and there was clearly a lot of rat droppings and other debris there. The staff member saw this, after which the opening was sealed and the mess was cleaned up.

Later, the park owner also arrived on the scene. He appeared to be noticeably intoxicated. A discussion then ensued on the spot about whether or not there could have been a rat in the cottage. The owner believed that rats could not get into the cottages, but could be present on the park grounds. The employee who had come to check earlier disagreed because he himself had seen the rat droppings in the cottage.

In the end, we were given different accommodations. The park later referred to this as a “significant upgrade.” We see it differently. We hadn’t asked for an upgrade. The cottage of the same type that was initially available as an alternative turned out not to have been cleaned. The more luxurious chalet was therefore the only available option.

The next morning, we were moving our belongings to the new accommodation. While doing so, we again found a large amount of rat droppings in a kitchen cabinet in the original cottage.

In addition, during our stay, we noticed the condition of some of the facilities. In the play area, we found a damaged piece of play equipment, and we did not find the restroom facilities in the play area to be clean.

We understand that at a vacation park, you can never completely rule out the possibility of pests being present somewhere. However, we consider a large rat in the accommodation, a hole with a lot of rat droppings under the refrigerator, and then yet another large amount of rat droppings in a kitchen cabinet to be something other than a random, one-time occurrence.

We have contacted the resort regarding this matter and expressed our concerns and disappointment. The resort has indicated that it does not wish to offer any additional financial compensation, as they believe that providing alternative accommodations was an appropriate solution. A nice vacation park, well-maintained with friendly staff. There was plenty for the kids to do, even at the end of the vacation when there were few children at the campground.
There’s a nice, clean pool with a fun indoor playground. There’s also an interactive field for soccer and basketball
The petting zoo is a nice bonus, too!

We booked a bungalow by the fishing pond at the park. When we arrived at the cottage, there were two meters of reeds in the water in front of it, and it turned out there weren’t even any fish in the water. We rebooked to a more expensive cottage and paid the difference. When we got there, we found a very dirty cottage. There was used toilet paper … in the toilet. Almost all the dishes were dirty, and the place hadn’t been vacuumed, etc., etc. We cleaned it ourselves and reported it when we checked out. The response was, “We’ll pass this along,” and that was it.
Conclusion… the cottages by the fishing pond have no fish, just reeds. And they’re dirty, with no service. The only advantage was the location by the canal. Read more Show less
