Schagen: Historic Charm & Folklore Markets

This charming historic town is perfect for a relaxing day out. Visit the lively market square around the Grote Kerk, where you can enjoy a drink on one of the many inviting terraces. In summer, the famous "West Frisian Folklore" market on Thursdays brings history to life with traditional costumes, parades, and old crafts. Don't forget the castle towers for a glimpse into the history of the local nobility. It's an atmospheric place to shop, dine, and soak up Dutch culture.

North Sea Beaches: Sun, Sand & Coastal Fun

For a breath of fresh air, head to the wide sandy beaches of Callantsoog or Petten. These coastal gems are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or taking long walks along the water’s edge. Children will love building sandcastles, while parents can relax at one of the beach pavilions, such as "Woest", for a meal with a sea view. Whether you come for a summer sunset or a brisk walk in the wind, the beach offers pure relaxation and fun for the whole family.

Schoorl Dunes: The Highest Dunes & Hiking Trails in the Netherlands

Nature lovers should definitely visit the Schoorl Dunes, where you’ll find the highest dunes in the Netherlands. This unique National Park offers a breathtaking contrast between expansive heathlands, dense pine forests, and rolling sand hills. It’s a paradise for hikers and cyclists, with more than 60 km of trails winding through the landscape.

The absolute highlight for families is the "Klimduin" (Climbing Dune) right in the center of Schoorl. This 51-meter-high sand hill is an adventurous playground where children can endlessly run down while parents watch from the terraces below. Visit the Buitencentrum visitor center to learn more about the area's flora and fauna before heading out to explore.

Texel: Seal Spotting & Island Adventures

A day trip to the island of Texel is an unforgettable adventure that starts just a short drive away in Den Helder. Even the ferry crossing itself is an experience; in just 20 minutes you’ll cross the Wadden Sea and often spot seabirds along the way. Once on the island, you’ll find yourself in a completely different world, with an island vibe, meadows full of sheep, and charming villages like Den Burg and De Koog. Visit Ecomare to see seals and porpoises up close, or climb the iconic red lighthouse at the northern tip for a spectacular view. The island is especially bike-friendly, making it easy to rent a bike and explore the dunes and beaches at your own pace. It’s the perfect "holiday within a holiday."

By itself a nice campground but there were a few frustrating things which I list below with accompanying tips and/or comments, namely the following. - Upon arrival went wrong, in the mail we were told that we could choose our own spot because we did not want to sit near the train track and upon arrival we were assigned a spot near the train track. - The campsite should be quiet from 22:00 but if after 23:30 there are still people talking loudly, children playing then it is a point of frustration. (This did diminish a bit after a few days as people left). - Also the sanitary building, very often running out of toilet paper, large construction lamp on it that you don't want in the middle of the night. (Maybe something of night lighting or less sheet after 22:00) - on arrival we were told that there is no gray water disposal but was on the website that dirty water pit is. (Bit of information on websige maybe adjust) Despite these are minor frustrations we will not come back just like that, children should be able to play and fun should be possible but not after the specified rest time, I think and information on website should really be improved and more clarity. Further opzich for families and children a nice campsite but for singles or people without children I would think twice.

We had a super vacation . Beautiful large place, clean plumbing and nice and quiet. Stood from early July 3 weeks and extended to late September so we could spend the weekends. Very friendly owners. We will definitely come back next year for the whole season. For us a big 10!
